TIL Therapy

Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocyte (TIL) therapy harvests the patient’s own immune cells from the tumor, expands them in the lab, and reinvigorates them to fight cancer.

What is TIL Therapy?

Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocytes (TILs) are naturally occurring immune cells that have already recognized and infiltrated the tumor. However, within the tumor microenvironment, they are often outnumbered or deactivated.

TIL Therapy involves surgically removing a portion of the tumor, isolating these specific "fighter" cells, expanding them to billions in number in a specialized laboratory, and infusing them back into the patient to overwhelm and destroy the cancer.

Is it Suitable for All Cancers?

Current Indications

No. TIL therapy is currently used more commonly in certain solid tumors, especially metastatic melanoma. Patient suitability is determined on an individual basis by a specialized medical team.

Recent FDA milestones (e.g., Lifileucel) have marked a major breakthrough for advanced melanoma patients who have progressed after other treatments.

Main Advantages

null
icon

Personalized

Uses the patient's own cells that have already successfully identified the tumor.

icon

Polyclonal Attack

Unlike CAR-T which targets one antigen, TILs can target multiple different tumor antigens simultaneously.

icon

Immune Strengthening

Massively boosts the number of active immune cells available to fight the cancer.

icon

One-Time Infusion

Typically administered as a single treatment course rather than continuous cycles.

The Treatment Journey

The overall treatment process typically takes several weeks involves key stages:
01

Tumor Resection

A surgeon removes a piece of the tumor tissue.

02

Manufacturing (Expansion)

In the lab, TILs are isolated from the tissue and grown to billions of cells (approx. 22 days).

03

Conditioning

The patient receives a short course of chemotherapy to prepare the body for the new cells.

04

Infusion & IL-2

The TILs are infused back into the patient, followed by Interleukin-2 (IL-2) to support cell growth.

(TIL Therapy)

  • What is TIL therapy?

TIL (Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocyte) therapy is an immunotherapy approach in which a patient’s own immune cells are harvested, expanded in the laboratory, and reinfused to fight cancer.

  • Is TIL therapy suitable for all types of cancer?

No. TIL therapy is currently used more commonly in certain solid tumors, especially metastatic melanoma. Patient suitability is determined on an individual basis.

  • What are the main advantages of TIL therapy?

Its personalized nature and its ability to strengthen the immune system in a targeted way are considered its main advantages.
